MV Govindan, AN Shamseer
Kozhikode: Following the election of MV Govindan as the CPM state secretary, another Kannur leader took charge as Assembly head in Kerala. Thalassery MLA AN Shamseer will assume the office of Speaker, while the current speaker MB Rajesh will be offered the charge of a minister.
CPM obliquely offers its reins to Kannur by appointing Kannur leaders as the head of the both Kerala Legislative Assembly and the ruling party. Persons, who hold key positions of the government and party, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, party secretary MV Govindan and LDF Convener EP Jayarajan, are from Kannur.
It was expected that MV Govindan’s resignation and appointment as party secretary will pave the way for major reshuffles in the cabinet. The CPM leaders had informed that only the position held by MV Govindan would be filled this time, and Saji Cheriyan’s post will remain vacant.
When MV Govindan resigned, Pinarayi Vijayan was the only minister in the cabinet from Kannur. Meanwhile, all the CPM MLAs except Shailaja were new faces in the Assembly. Hence, it had been inferred that Shamseer would be considered for the minister’s post as he is a state committee member. Although, the party proposed him as the Speaker while appointing MB Rajesh as minister, his portfolios have not been decided yet.
Shamseer represented Thalassery twice in the Assembly. In 2016, he was elected with a majority of 34,117 votes. In the next election of 2021, he could increase the majority to 36,801 votes. He had served as the SFI state secretary, All India joint secretary, DYFI district president, and state president.
