Kannur: Prajith, who succumbed to the fire engulfed him and his wife Reesha in Kannur on Thursday, helped to open the back door of his car to let the others escape before trying to rescue himself and his wife. Unfortunately, the front doors were jammed and they got stuck inside, resulting in the mishap.

The Kuttiattoor native couple were charred to death when they were heading to a hospital after Reesha started to experience labour pain.

Prajith and Reesha were sitting in the front seats while the other four family members who accompanied them were in the rear seats. Prajith had stopped the car by seeing flames rising from the front of the dashboard. Soon he helped to open the back doors and made others get out of the car. Unfortunately, the front doors got stuck leaving the couple helpless to escape from the car.

The couple had succumbed to the burn injuries when the fire force officials arrived and took them out of the car.

Visuals captured from the spot showed the locals running towards the burning car to rescue the hapless couple who got stuck inside it.

Some of them were seen trying to open the door to rescue the man and the woman.

"We were totally helpless at that time as the front side of the car was immediately engulfed in fire. We could not do much to save them as we feared that the oil tank of the car will explode in any time," an eyewitness told the media.

Police said the reasons for the fire could be ascertained only after verification by technical experts.

"The car will be properly checked with the help of all the scientific as well as automobile experts. Let us investigate a little more and then we will be able to get more information," police said.
