‘Kannur Pudava’ eyes to mark its presence in Kerala wedding textile market

Kannur: Kannur district panchayat is eyeing to mark its presence in the Kerala textile market with the launch of ‘Kannur Pudava’--a kind of traditional handloom wedding saree. The quality of Kannur handloom sarees is touted to be on par with the renowned Kanchipuram sarees of Tamil Nadu. The launch of ‘Kannur Pudava’ is expected to make wedding purchases next door for the Malayalees.

If pre-booked, the customers can customise the sarees according to their preferences. The project launched by the district panchayat also aims to transform Kannur's handloom favourable to the tastes and preferences of the new generation.

The panchayat will select experts in handloom enterprises and offer special training to weave the wedding sarees. Only the best quality looms will be utilised and the support of noted designers will be sought to train the weavers.

The project also eyes of market abroad. District panchayat president PP Divya said that the panchayat is deliberating to conduct fashion shows to attract more youth to handloom clothes.
