Kannur child assault case: Investigation transferred to crime branch

Kannur: The crime branch has taken over investigation of the Thalassery child assault case. Crime Branch SP KV Babu will lead the investigation. The case was transferred to the crime branch following allegations of police lapses.

The department has begun an internal investigation regarding the police procedures. There were allegations that the police were reluctant to register case in the beginning. Police arrested 20-year-old accused Muhammed Sihshad after the CCTV footage of the incident went viral.

A six-year-old migrant boy, Ganesh, was kicked by Sihshad while he was leaning on a car parked in the ‘no parking’ zone. A court here remanded the accused for two weeks.

Another arrest recorded

The police arrested another person in connection with the case. PK Mahmood (55) was arrested for beating the child. He was later released on bail.

Mahmood runs a tea shop near the area where the incident took place. He was arrested after the CCTV footage of him beating the child emerged.

Meanwhile, police have begun the procedure for the custody of Sihshad. Police had slapped charges including attempt to murder on Sihshad. The boy is undergoing treatment at the Thalassery general hospital.
