Kannur airport terminal building nearing completion
Mattannur: Works on the passenger terminal building of Kannur International Airport is in progress. Eighty-five percent of the construction works have been completed. Also, the interiors of the building is under progress. All the works will be completed by January.
The 8 lakh sqft passenger terminal is built with ultra-modern facilities. Domestic and international terminals can accommodate 2000 passengers simultaneously. The estimate of construction is Rs 498 crore. The pictures and engravings in traditional Kerala design on the interiors of the building will attract passengers.
The construction of the runway safety area also will commence after the monsoon withdrawal and will be completed by January. The works of the 3050 metre runway, air traffic control building, apron area, fuel field, fire station, work shop and sub stations are finished. The ATC building will soon be handed over to the airport authority.
A team headed by Customs Assistant Commissioner visited the airport and assessed the construction works. The representatives from the biodiversity board had recommended safety measures to reduce the impact on nature due to the construction of airport. Trees are being planted near the link roads.
The airport is expected to be fully functional by next September. Jet Airways and GoAir companies have received permit for service from Kannur to Abu Dhabi and Dammam. Construction of roads to the airport will start soon. The estimated cost works out to Rs 126 crores.
