Kannur airport opened for public till Oct 12
Kannur: The Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) authority has decided to speed up the works to extend the runway to 4000 metres targeting European services in future. At present the length of the runway is 3050 metres and the works are on progress to extend it to 4000 metres. It is reported that KIAL will acquire 245 acres of land for this purpose.
A general meeting of KIAL has decided to complete the runway development as soon as possible.
Huge aircraft is necessary to extend services to Europe and other foreign countries. Hence, a runway of 4000 metres should be constructed to enable the operation of such flights at Kannur airport.
Presently, the airport has arrangements to facilitate landing of big aircraft like Boeing-777. It has space to park 20 aircraft at a time. However, KIAL authority plans that Kannur airport will be the largest international airport in Kerala with the development of runway to 4000 metres.
According to KIAL, the runway will be developed within one and half years.
Kannur is the only airport in south India which has the facility of a large area. KIAL acquired 2,300 acres for the airport. In this, KIAL has purchased 640 acres of land under the share of the government in the airport project. Rest of the land is not handed over to KIAL yet.
KIAL has requested the government to give the rest of the land for lease. It is learned that hotels, Ayurvedic resort, airport village, airport township and barracks of security personnel will be constructed in this land.
More Airlines to operate service
However, number of airlines companies which operate services from KIAL will be confirmed at the high level meeting on October 9. Air India Express, Indigo, Go Air will attend the meeting.
However, it is reported that more foreign airline companies are seeking permission to operate service from Kannur airport. Apart from Indian companies, 11 foreign airlines companies have expressed interest to operate service from here. But the central government refused to give sanction to foreign companies to operate services.
Air India Express, Indigo and Go Air will operate international services. Whereas Air India, Jet and Spice Jet are expected to operate domestic services.
Airport opens for public visit
Thousands of people visited the airport on Friday when the airport was opened for public visit ahead of the inauguration on December 9. People can visit the airport from 10 am to 4 pm till October 12. CSF personnel were deployed here to control the visitors.
The terminal is decorated with beautiful mural paintings. Visitors rushed to the area to take selfies with the beautiful paintings.
KIAL and Kannur natives are all set to celebrate the big day in the history of Kannur.
