Palakkad: Kanniyamma, who took over the leadership of Plachimada struggle after Mayilamma passed away here on Thursday. She was 90. The tribal leader was suffering from age-related illnesses. She breathed her last at her residence here.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Plachimada struggle. Following the death of Mayilamma, Kanniyamma organised the women of Plachimada together for the protests against the plant of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd at their hamlet. Along with other fierce women, including Pappammal, Muthulakshmi, Sarasa, Parvathy and Mayilatha, Kanniyamma worked hard to make their struggles known to the outside world.

Though Kanniyamma was uneducated, she was always at the forefront of Plachimada protests. Whenever the environmentalists and journalists arrived in the village to study the issues there, Kanniyamma guided them. She was on the frontline of the parliament march conducted in demand to introduce the Plachimada tribunal bill for compensations.

Even when she was bedridden, she kept on urging to speed up the procedures of compensation from the government.
