Kalikavu (Malappuram): A barren land or a field in our neighbourhood would be an ideal place for youngsters to hang out, enjoy sports and train. However, we are losing such hangouts, forcing youngsters to part away from physical sports and games. Such a fate was befalling the Puttamanna Football Club in Kalikavu in Malapuram district when they had to leave the 30 cents of land where they used to play football.
However, the unthinkable happened after the locals collectively put efforts to finance the club to buy 70 cents of land for the club. A field in the locality was identified and the landowner was willing to sell them at the lowest possible price.
But, the financial burden kept the players and locals scratching the head until individual contributions started to pour in little by little. The idea of crowdfunding started with a five-year-old boy handing over his savings of Rs 100 to the club.
Dr PK Mustafa Haji donated Rs 2 lakh and Sharafuddin Cholas paid them Rs 1 lakh. Further, the club members also donated Rs 10,000 each. Some of the members took up odd jobs and others collected scaps to raise money. Eventually, the land was sold to the club for Rs 17 lakh.
