Kochi: A youth from Kakkanad has accused the Ernakulam North Police of assaulting him without provocation. The incident occurred on Saturday when the police officers arrived at the spot where the youth, Rineesh, was sitting near the Northbridge.
According to Rineesh, the police officers questioned him and demanded his phone for examination. When he refused to hand over the phone, they proceeded with a body examination and attacked him with a lathi. Rineesh received a blow to his lips when he questioned their actions, and he felt like collapsing and vomiting.
The police took Rineesh into custody and later to a hospital after he vomited at the police station. He was allowed to leave by 5 pm and is currently undergoing treatment for health-related issues.
Rineesh, who is employed in a manpower supply agency, stated that he was waiting near the bridge to speak with workers who arrived looking for jobs. However, the North Police denied the allegations and claimed that they took him into custody after finding him under suspicious circumstances. This incident comes a few days after the alleged custodial death of a man in Tripunithura, which led to immense public scrutiny of the Kerala Police.
