Attappadi: A pregnant tribal woman from Kadukumanna hamlet here, in Kerala's Palakkad district, was carried by her relatives to the hospital in a makeshift stretcher. The woman had to be carried for over 3 km due to the lack of proper roads. The incident cannot be singled out and it triggered heated discussions on the lack of proper roads from hamlets.

The residents in Mele Thudukki, Thazhe Kudukki, Galasi, Murugala and Kinattukara hamlets have no other choice than a makeshift stretcher if they are ill and can’t walk.

Even officials are continuing to remain mute spectators to these incidents. Anavayal is the nearest point to these hamlets, where roads are in good condition. Till that point, the residents have to tread a challenging path.

For instance, the distances are Mele Thudukki- Anavayal: 11km; Thazhe Kudukki- Anavayal: 9km; Galasi- Anavayal: 14km. While in some routes, the residents have to cross the river too.
