Thiruvananthapuram: Hours after the opposition leader snubbed the comment on tax boycott by K Sudhakaran as ‘mockery of Pinarayi Vijayan’, the KPCC president said he stands by his statement and people should avoid paying the additional cess “whenever possible.”

Sudhakaran had called for boycotting the payment of the social security cess announced in the Kerala Budget 2023-24 for fuel. As the Congress leader was chastised for the difficulty of not paying a cess while buying fuel, Satheesan came to the rescue, saying Sudhakaran was mocking Pinarayi, who had called for a similar boycott of hikes in water and land taxes in 2014.

Satheesan added that what Sudhakaran said was not the policy of the Congress.

However, Sudhakaran reiterated that people should not pay the additional amount whenever possible. He added that there is no difference of opinion between him and Satheesan.

When mediapersons told him that Pinarayi was talking about water tax, he said Congress would consider if the hiked water bill also could be boycotted.

The KPCC chief said he would present the tax boycott idea at the party meeting on Sunday.

Congress will go ahead with the protests against the fuel cess, he said.
