Thiruvananthapuram: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted the charge sheet in connection with the accident case in which journalist K M Basheer was killed. IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman is named key accused and Wafa Firoz is named second accused in the charge sheet.
According to the charge sheet, driving under influence of alcohol and over speed led to the accident. There are a total of 100 witnesses in the case. Along with the 66-page charge sheet, the police have also submitted 75 evidences to the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thiruvananthapuram.
The car in which Sriram and Wafa were travelling hit on K M Basheer’s bike near Thiruvananthapuram museum on August 3, 2019. Wafa who owns the vehicle stated that it was Sriram who drove the car. But Sriram stated that Wafa was driving the car at the time of the accident.
The police negligence in completing the primary investigation and other procedures led to severe criticism. Sriram was not subjected to any medical check-up immediately after the accident. Following this, many crucial evidences could not be collected.
Sriram was suspended from service soon after the incident. Though the chief secretary recommended to reinstate Sriram in service, the chief minister rejected it and extended his suspension for three more months.
