Kasaragod: Muslim League leadership directed Manjeshwaram MLA M C Kamaruddin, who is accused in jewellery deposit scam, to resign from the UDF district chairman post.
The leadership demanded his resignation after Crime Branch initiated probe into the scam and as the local polls are around the corner.
Muslim League district president TE Abdullah and state treasurer CT Muhammad Ali are being considered for the post of UDF chairman in Kasaragod.
Kamaruddin was elected as Manjeswaram MLA in the bypolls held after the demise of former MLA PB Abdul Razack. Following this, Kamaruddin resigned from the post of Muslim League district president. But he continued as UDF district chairman.
Kamaruddin was booked for the jewellery deposit scam related to the Fashion Gold Jewellery. The jewellery was opened with Kamaruddin as chairman and Muslim League district working committee member TK Pookoya Thanagal as the managing director. According to the complaint filed, the duo did not return the deposit to over 800 people. It is learned that Kamaruddin and Pookoya Thanagal swindled Rs 136 cr from the depositors.
