Jacobite church ends sacramental relationship with Orthodox church
Kottayam: Jacobite Syrian faction of the Malankara Church has ended the sacramental relationship with Orthodox faction following the dispute over control of churches.
According to reports, the Jacobite faction has taken this decision to protest over the government’s move to take over churches possessed by them for orthodox faction and interruption of the funeral at the church cemetery.
Mar Ignatius Aprem II, patriarch of Syrian Orthodox church has approved this decision taken by the regional episcopal synod.
Baselios Thomas I, Catholicos of Jacobite Syrian Church has issued orders to all metropolitans for implementing the synod’s decision. The decision will be applicable for ceremonies like wedding, baptism and funeral.
Major decisions of the Synod
Orthodox priests will not be allowed to attend ceremonies of Jacobite church believers. Catholicos of Jacobite Syrian Church also banned Jacobite church priests from attending ceremonies along with priests of the orthodox church.
Baptism ceremony should be conducted at churches of Jacobite faction. If any child of Jacobite faction is baptised in Orthodox church, the child’s name should be added to Jacobite church’s register only after performing holy chrism and holy mass at the church. The person who blesses the child must be a member of the Jacobite church.
The Jacobite church will not confirm the wedding of people from the Orthodox church. If any person from Orthodox faction wants to get married at Jacobite church, they need to join the Jacobite church after receiving holy oil and attending holy mass.
