Malappuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Saturday selected former MP P V Abdul Wahab as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election.

Party state president Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal made an official announcement at a press meet. Party leaders P K Kunhalikutty, K P A Majeed and E Ahmed accompanied him.

This is the second time Wahab, the IUML state secretary and also a known entrepreneur, is selected for the post.

Kunhalikutty said Wahab's name was cleared after following all necessary procedures.

'Every time, a few names will be doing the rounds. Once a candidate is finalised, other names will become irrelevant,' he said.

A majority in the party wanted nomination of party state general secretary K P A Majeed for the post. Also, Majeed was backed by various sections in the party.

The rift within the party came out in the open on Friday with Syed Munavarali Shihab Thangal expressing his dissent over allotting the Rajya Sabha seat to Abdul Wahab in a Facebook post.

Since the meetings on Friday failed to arrive at a consensus, Panakkad Syed HyderaliShihab Thangal was designated by the party leaders to take a decision.
