It was a mistake to accept Swapna’s invitation, says Speaker
Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan opined that he shouldn’t have attended the function on invitation from Swapna Suresh, an accused in the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case.
Speaking to Mathrubhumi News, Speaker said, “No Intelligence report is usually obtained regarding the programmes. Now, this has taught me a lesson that report should be sought and details studied before attending any function. Now, I realize it was a mistake from my office.”
“It was Swapna and not Sandeep who invited me for the inauguration of the shop. Though usually I avoid such functions, I attended this respecting the feelings of the owner’s mother. The invitation letter carried the names of all local public representatives and no one stopped me from attending it,” he added.
Swapna is a known face. For the past four years, she was the one who had represented UAE Consulate in front of Kerala government. I knew her as a senior official of the Consulate who contacted government for various programmes. I was never suspicious of her. Whenever there were issues related to Malayali expatriates in UAE, she was the one we contacted,” Speaker stated.
He also affirmed that no stance to help her was taken by him after the gold smuggling case came out. She never sought any help from me. We only spoke official matters, he said.
The Speaker also opined that a person who sees obscenity in patting one’s shoulder only reveals the distorted mind.
