Kannur: PWD Minister PA Mohammed Riyas who attended an event in Dharmadom on Sunday said that Vande Bharat is not an alternative to SilverLine. He also criticized the BJP and stated that it is the responsibility of the Union Government to allocate trains to Kerala.

Riyas said that Kerala is the largest revenue source for the Indian Railway and emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Union Government to provide modern facilities to the state. He also expressed his pleasure in seeing Kerala finally receiving a new train after a prolonged wait.

Meanwhile, Riyas also clarified that Vande Bharat trains would have to operate at a lower speed. This is due to more than 600 curves on railway tracks. "Currently, the train will only be able to conduct services at speeds enjoyed by Jan Shatabdi trains. To overcome this, railways must spend approximately 10 to 20 years acquiring land for straightening curves without disrupting traffic. However, such a project would be a huge financial burden," he added.

He remarked that the Kerala government adopted the SilverLine project after realising that the widening of the National Highway and its development wouldn't solve traffic problems. With less time, people can travel from one part of the state to another on SilverLine. Therefore, train services like Vande Bharat cannot be called an alternative to SilverLine, he added.
