Regret insisting on Karunakaran’s resignation as CM: Hassan

'Karunakaran should have been given an opportunity to complete his term'

Kozhikode: In a new revelation, KPCC President M M Hassan on Saturday said Congress leader A K Antony had strongly opposed the party’s move to remove then Chief Minister K Karunakaran from the post over the ISRO spy case.

Speaking at the ‘K Karunakaran commemoration meeting’ here, Hassan said Karunakaran should have been given an opportunity to complete his term. He also said that he regrets having stood against Karunakaran then.

Media had reported that it was A K Antony who showed the door to Karunakaran, but it was wrong.

“Antony had advised me and Oommen Chandy against ousting Karunakaran. I really regret not paying heed to Antony’s words. Antony was correct in warning that the move could adversely affect the party,” Hassan said.

A crack was formed within Congress in Kerala after expelling P T Chacko from the ministerial post. Antony had pointed out that removing ‘Leader’ from the CM’s post will add to the touble.

“I was among those who clamoured for Leader’s resignation. Looking back, I think I had done injustice to him. Though I wanted to reveal this in my autobiography, I felt like opening up about it now, right here,” Hassan said.

K Karunankaran had to step down as Chief Minister in 1995 in the backdrop of ISRO spy case. It was the Congress (I) group which demanded Karunakaran’s resignation.
