Irregularities in gold offerings at Sabarimala, audit dept to carry out inspection on Monday
Sabarimala: The state audit department has found serious irregularities in the management of the gold received as offerings in Sabarimala temple. The department has found that there is reduction in the quantity of gold and an inspection will be carried out in the temple’s strong room on Monday.
The department also found that the temple authority shifted gold and silver from the strong room without valid documents. Devaswom vigilance also received complaints regarding this. On the basis of these complaints, state audit department has decided to carry out a detailed inspection by opening the strong room of the temple.
Earlier devaswom vigilance had reported that the temple authority did not record details of the gold and silver kept in the strong room. Audit department will examine whether the temple authority followed the rules on storing gold.
Gold and silver received as offering in Sabarimala temple are being kept at the strong room of Travancore Devaswom board near Aaranmula temple. Officials under Assistant Accounts Officer are in charge of the strong room. As per rule, the three officials must be present while opening the strong room.
“I think the former officials were inefficient in handing over the duty of the strong room management along with relevant documents to the new officials”, said Travancore Devaswom Board president A Padmakumar.
At the same time, he dismissed the report which claimed fall in quantity of the gold from strong room.
When new official takes in charge, the old official must hand over the records of the strong room. But this practice is not followed since 6 years. A complaint was raised in this regard. The audit department appointed by the court will carry out inspection in connection with this. Devaswom board will take stern action if the department finds any irregularities in the store room, he added.
