Thiruvananthapuram: Inspection of new vehicles ahead of registration will be done away with. A draft notification for online registration was published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Earlier, the new vehicles had to be examined by the officials of Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) to verify engine and chassis numbers.

When ‘Vahan’ registration facility came into force, these type of verification was considered unnecessary. The details of the vehicle were entered from the showrooms. But in ‘Vahan’ software, the vehicle manufacturers will be entering the details.

As soon as the vehicle is brought from the plant, engine and chassis numbers and other details will be entered in the ‘Vahan’ portal. The dealerships are allowed to record only the name and address of the buyer. Manufacturing date, model and basic information cannot be changed.

The vehicles like bus and lorry in which the body is manufactured on the chassis need to be examined. Temporary permit is given only for chassis. The vehicle is examined to verify if the coach was manufactured based on conditions. Once the Aadhaar details are included, online registration procedure will be transparent. The final notification will be issued soon.
