Inmates 'call the shots' in Viyyur jail
Viyyur: The inmates of the Viyyur Central Prison are literally enjoying a free ride inside the walls.
A few of them, who are assisting the officials in office works, are even dealing with confidential documents and files and they used to pass information about case details, remand, parole to their cell mates.
The officials, however, explain that their service is hired due to the dearth of staff.
Interestingly, certain places inside the jail are inaccessible to police personnel and jail authorities.
Recently, an inmate verbally abused a staff for waking him up in the morning hours. As the authorities prepared to take him to the guard house for enquiry, the inmates gathered hindering the move. The jail authorities are hesitant to take further action.
A section of inmates allege that the officials are turning a blind eye to the activities of certain persons fearing political targeting.
The inmates include those charged by NIA, TP murder case convicts and Maoist Rupesh. Also, UAPA has been slapped on a few others. The inmates are even helping the officials to record the names of visitors.
Of late, an inmate had attacked his colleague for failing to bring ganja upon his return. This apart, ganja was seized from an inmate recently by police personnel at the entrance. However, jail authorities are still reluctant to make a move.
Also the ganja search using sniffer dogs has been stopped owing to the protest by the inmates.
