Thiruvananthapuram: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rain in the state for the next 2 days. Following this, yellow and orange alerts have been issued in various districts.
Orange alert has been issued in Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts on December 5 and in Ernakulam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Malappuram districts on December 6. This means that these districts can receive 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm rainfall in 24 hours.
Yellow alert has been declared in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts on December 5 and in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kollam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on December 6 and in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur on December 7. Rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected in these areas in 24 hours.
The public will have to exercise caution as IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in the state. People residing in low lying, landslide prone areas and on river banks will have to be extremely cautious.
IMD also urged the public to follow lighting guidelines issued by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.
