Vizhinjam: Kidney mafias have become more active on the coastal regions of the state. A gang based in Ernakulam is managing illegal kidney trades by targeting economically backward families. It is alleged that the illicit traders have approached some poor families in Vizhinjam for selling kidney.

Advance amount has been given to some of them and they have already fixed the deal. The crime surfaced when some of the people involved in the deal following a rift between them and the dealers and reported it. A special intelligence team has initiated a probe into the case.

A woman in Vizhinjam who has a debt of Rs 7 lakhs was approached for kidney trade by offering Rs 8 lakhs. She was bothered by the debt caused by her daughter’s wedding following which she agreed to trade her kidney. She has to give a rent of Rs 2000 also for her house. Her husband and son also are fishermen.

The family could not pay their debts with the meagre earnings from fishing. While approaching many people for financial help, they met an intermediary of the organ traders who took them to the agent.

On October 28, she was admitted to a hospital in Ernakulam for medical check-ups. From there, an Ernakulam native promised her Rs 8 lakhs, expenses for treatment and travel. Four Vizhinjam natives were also accompanying the person.

The agent had asked for a commission of Rs 50,000 from the money she gets from kidney selling. She was informed that the kidney is going to be transplanted to a 44-year-old woman in Malappuram and the receiver’s Aadhaar card was also shown to her. Later, she was discharged from the hospital.

The donor was asked to report at the hospital again for a scanning on November 6. She went to the hospital with her son that time. It was only then she informed him about the organ transplant. The son who was annoyed by this, left the hospital with his mother and the incident also came to light.
