Illegal firecracker unit catches fire in Alappuzha


Alappuzha: A major fire erupted at a firecracker unit at Haripad here on Saturday following an explosion. The shed in which the firecrackers were kept was completely gutted in the fire. No casualties were reported.

A tragedy was averted as fire force personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

The incident took place at the residence of Noushad near Muttom Pallipad junction here on Saturday around 2.00 pm.

As the sound of the explosion rocked the area, the natives were terrified. The people noticed the mishap after hearing the sound of the firecrackers bursting together.

Fire Force from Mavelikkara reached the spot as informed by the locals.

Police informed that the firecracker unit was operated illegally without a license. Firecrackers for temples in the Haripad and nearby places were produced in some houses here. It is reported that this illegal manufacturing of firecrackers has been continuing in the area for many years.

A team of police led by Haripad SI Savyasachi examined the accident spot and seized firecrackers from Noushad’s house.
