Kottayam: A student of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Valavoor in Kottayam drowned at the Marmala waterfalls near Erattupetta on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Nirmal Kumar Nehra, a 22-year-old youngster hailing from Rajasthan.

Nehra was part of the eight-member gang who had reached the place for a bath by noon. Three of them, including Nehra, were swept away by the strong water currents. Two were rescued but attempts to save Nehra went in vain.

Locals claim that the group ventured into the waters despite the warning.

It was Nenmakootam’s members who were involved in the rescue mission on an alert raised by the onlookers.
