Pathanamthitta/Kozhikode: Three youngsters died due to drowning on Sunday in two separate incidents in the Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode districts of Kerala.
In one incident, two out of seven youngsters, who went to bathe in Pathanamthitta's Achankovil river, were washed away due to strong water currents. The deceased have been identified as Kumbazha natives Abilash(17) and Abhiraj (16), who are siblings. According to locals, the group got into the water despite warnings. It is learnt that Abilash got into the water for saving Abhiraj. The group sought the help of onlookers. Though they intervened, the attempt failed. Following this police and fire and rescue team were intimated. The bodies were recovered after a 90-minute-long search.
Similarly, a boy who went to bathe in a stream of Pathangayam waterfall at Kodenchery in Kozhikode drowned after losing himself in depth. The deceased has been identified as Amal (18), a native of Eranhipalam. It may be noted that authorities had banned bathing at Kodenchery the other day. At least 20 people have lost their lives at this point.
As per the records of the Fire and Rescue Department, on average, three people drown in the state per day. In the year 2021 alone, there have been 1,102 reported cases of drowning. In the previous years, this number was less than 1,000.
