Idukki dam shutter opened on trial basis
Cheruthoni: Trial run in Idukki Cheruthoni dam began at 12.30 pm on Thursday. One of the five shutters of the dam was opened by 50 cm. The middle shutter was opened and will remain open for 4 hours and 50 cubic metre water will be released per second.
Even when the shutters are opened, the water level in the dam in not decreasing, but instead increasing. At 3.05 pm, the water level was at 2399.24 feet.
The authorities decided to stage the trial run when the water level in the dam reached 2398.98 feet at 12.30 pm. The decision to start the trial run was taken in the emergency meeting convened by the chief minister.
Within four hours, it is expected that about 7,200,000 cubic metre (0.72 million cubic metre) water will be lost from the dam reservoir. The capacity of Lower Periyar is 4.55 million cubic metre. The water released from Idukki dam comes up to 6.5 percent of the capacity of Lower Periyar.
This amount of water is sufficient to produce 1.058 million units of electricity. The KSEB will face a loss of Rs 40 lakh within 4 hours, if a loss of one million units per hour is counted.
Idukki district collector Jeevan Babu informed that the people dwelling in the valley of Cheruthoni dam and in an area of 100 metre near Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers to stay alert. People have been warned against fishing, bathing and taking selfies in the river and dam premises.
The dam was opened in 1992 before this. Then the shutter of the dam opened on a Sunday morning in October was lowered after five days on Thursday at 5 in the evening.
