Idukki dam at 2399 ft; Trial run likely by 12 noon
Cheruthoni: It has decided to stage trial run in Idukki dam as the water level has increased crossing all limits. At 9 am, the water level in the dam was at 2398.66 feet. Since heavy rains continue in the catchment areas, the water level is likely to reach 2399 feet by noon.
The decision was taken in the emergency meeting convened by the chief minister. The middle shutter of the five shutters will be opened by 12 in the noon. The shutter will be raised by 50 cm. 50 cubic metre water per second will be released. It will remain open for four hours.
Idukki district collector Jeevan babu informed that the people dwelling in the valley of Cheruthoni dam and in an area of 100 metre near Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers.
Meanwhile, KSEB is preparing to stage a trial run considering the rising water level. Trial run will be staged after issuing a red alert. Shutters of Idamalayar dam has been opened at 5 am. The water will reach Aluva within 5-6 hours. It was decided to stage the trial run in Idukki dam only after the water level in Idamalayar dam is reduced.
This is to prevent a flood in the Periyar river. Also, the barrage in Bhoothathankettu does not have the capacity to store the water flowing from both Idukki and Idamalayar dams. However, the trial run will be decided after assessing the situations.
