Water level increasing in Mullaperiyar; Cheruthoni dam likely to be opened


Idukki: With the water level in Mullaperiyar dam increasing, the district administration is considering opening of the shutters of Idukki Cheruthoni dam. Water will be released in low quantity.

The water level in Mullaperiyar dam has crossed 130 feet. The dam is likely to be filled completely in case of heavy rainfall. This will require releasing of water to Idukki dam.

Presently, there is not much rainfall in the catchment areas of Idukki dam whereas heavy rainfall is occurring in the catchment area of Mullaperiyar dam.

KSEB officials will convene a meeting with the district collector at the collectorate on Friday to assess the situation. They will consider opening the dam shutters after assessing the water flow and rainfall.
