Idukki: In the backdrop of rising water level, ten shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam have been opened. In addition to the eight shutters currently open, two more shutters were opened at 3:30 am without any warning by Tamil Nadu. At present, 8000 cumecs of water is flowing out of the Mullaperiyar. As a result, several houses in Vallakkadavu were flooded.

The shutters are raised by 60 centimetres. The district collector said that the people residing on both sides of the Periyar river should be vigilant. Residents of Vallakkadavu were worried when the dam opened at midnight without warning.

The people here are protesting for opening without proper warning. This is the fourth time in a month that the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam have been opened after 10 pm without warning. Two days ago, two shutters were opened in a similar manner.

The shutters of the dam were completely closed on Wednesday morning but as it was raining again by yesterday evening, the water level rose and water overflowed from the dam.
