ICMR suppressed Covid-19 data on behalf of Modi govt, says report
New Delhi: A New York Times (NYT) report, that seems absolutely unpleasant for the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, reveals that the top officials of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) downplayed the risks posed by the Covid-19 pandemic by suppressing data and tailored the findings of a study on behalf of the central government.
The results of the study were merged well with two main goals of Modi government; restart India’s stricken economy and kick off campaigning for his party in state elections, the report said.
The report quotes Dr Anup Agarwal, a former scientist of ICMR, “Science is being used as a political weapon to forward the government narrative rather than help people.”
Anup Agarwal, a physician then working for India’s top science agency, which reviewed and published the study, worried that its conclusions would lull the country into a false sense of security.
Senior officials at ICMR suppressed data showing the risks, according to the researchers and documents. They pressured scientists to withdraw another study that called the government’s efforts into question, the researchers said, and distanced the agency from a third study that foresaw a second wave.
