Kannur: More than 300 vehicles were destroyed on Thursday after a major fire broke out in a junkyard near Taliparamba. The fire, that started at 11.30 am, was doused after three hours of continuous effort of the fire force, police and natives.

The presence of fuel in vehicles accelerated the fire.

The yard contains vehicles seized by Taliparamba, Sreekandapuram and Pazhayangadi police stations in various cases. It included lorries, cars, bikes and other vehicles.

It is suspected that a fire from a nearby hill might have spread to the yard. Locals said that the area was prone to fire. Last year also there was a fire accident in the same location. It is learnt that the fire force had warned police about the possibility of such an accident. Police have started a probe to establish the source of the fire.
