Idukki: A youth was shot dead following a verbal clash that broke out in a hotel at Ashoka Kavala in Moolamattom. Another person who sustained serious injuries in the attack has been admitted to Kolancherry Medical College near here.

The deceased is identified as Keerithodu native Sanal Babu, driver of a private bus ‘Devi’ which operates services at Moolamattom. Police took AKG colony resident Philip Martin (30) into custody over the murder case.

The incident was reported at a newly opened hotel in Ashoka Kavala at around 11 pm on Saturday. When Philip Martin and his friend reached the hotel, the woman who runs it told Martin that there was no food but a parcel was handed over to another person who had booked food earlier. This provoked Martin and he started abusing the hotel owner.

Enraged, Martin went to his house nearby and came back with a gun and fired in the air," said a senior police official.

The hotel owner and family were inside the hotel while some of the locals were standing out.

The official said after firing in the air, Martin got into the car to leave but came out of the vehicle seeing a crowd gathering and fired shots again.

"However, this time two people who were travelling through the area got hit. One person died and another was injured," the official said.

Though Sanal was taken to a hospital at Moolamattom, he could not be saved.
