Kannur: The Union government should not misuse the judiciary to carry out their political vendetta, remarked LDF Convener EP Jayarajan after a Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to a two-year jail term in a defamation case over his remark on the 'Modi' surname.
While speaking to the media in Kannur, Jayarajan stated that the public does not view the court's verdict upheld the sanctity of the judiciary. Questions may arise while examining the court verdict circumstances. I hope the court will observe that the public won't agree to this verdict, added Jayarajan.
Jayarajan is the first senior CPM leader to react to the matter.
On Thursday, a Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in the 2019 criminal defamation case filed over his "why all thieves have the Modi surname" remarks.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma, which held Rahul Gandhi guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500 (dealing with defamation), also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.
