Higher officials involved in gold smuggling to be trapped in 'call connect'
Kochi: The call details are the major evidence to trap the higher officials involved in the gold smuggling case. The NIA and the Customs are after those whom the accused contacted during the crisis.
Even after tracing the suspects, the probe team did not arrest them in order to know whom the accused are contacting for help. The Customs also denied help from the police due to this reason. The probe teams have highlighted the phone data in the documents submitted in the court as well.
The probe team could have arrested Swapna and Sandeep on the day Sarith was arrested. However, they did not nab them in order to see who all are the higher officials they would connect.
As soon as the case's link with UAE consulate came to light, the Ministry of Home Affairs was informed. A joint confidential probe was conducted by the central agencies placing only the Customs in the limelight.
As a third person other than Swapna and Sandeep was likely to contact the higher officials, the probe team observed the phones of all of them. They arrested Swapna and Sandeep after making sure that all phone conversations to be useful in the investigation were collected.
Even after they got clues about Rameez from Sarith, they delayed the arrest in order to obtain call details. The Customs had made it clear in the petition filed in the court for taking Rameez into custody that they have collected mobile phone call records.
