Kollam: As the demand for eggs went up in Qatar owing to FIFA World Cup 2022, the egg export from Tamil Nadu has doubled. With this, the egg supply to Kerala has dropped heavily leading to hike in prices.

The price of eggs has gone up to Rs 6 - Rs 6.50 from the earlier price of Rs 5. In some grocery shops, eggs are not even available.

According to reports from the poultry farms in Tamil Nadu, egg exports to Qatar have doubled since the beginning of the World Cup.

Around 20 to 25 lakh eggs are being exported to Qatar from Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district alone.

“In Kerala, a total of 1.40 crore eggs come from Tamil Nadu. Around 40 lakh eggs are produced within the state as well,” said Dr D Shine Kumar, assistant director of Animal Welfare Department.

“When export increases and supply decreases, prices will go up naturally. Three kinds of eggs are imported from Tamil Nadu namely Bullet, Medium and Large. All are mixed and sold for the same price in Kerala,” he added.
