Hefty fines to continue for helmetless riding, seat belt violation
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has decided to reduce the heavy fine for seven traffic violations in the state at a high level meeting. Fines for not wearing helmet and seat belt will continue as it is. The meeting presided over by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan also decided to approach the central government citing the flaws in the new traffic rules.
Law secretary will look into the possibilities to charge less amount for traffic violations which have fine between Rs 1000 to 10,000. Ordinance regarding the reduction of fine amounts will be issued after this study. Motor vehicle department and police will start to charge fines only after the issuance of the ordinance.
Till then, cases of traffic rule violations will be transferred to the courts. Transport secretary and transport commissioner will decide the amount that needs to be reduced. Legal secretary was also asked to examine the cutting of fines.
