Heavy rains trigger landslide in Palakkad


Palakkad: A landslide occurred near Mangalam Dam near Vadakkenchery here on Wednesday evening. No casualty has been reported so far. Water rushed to over 50 houses in VRT Colony, Odathodu and Pothanthodu and roads in the vicinity submerged. People have been evacuated to a school nearby. Rescue workers have been trying to clear the dilapidated roads to ensure traffic movement.

In the meantime, high alert has been declared across the state in view of cyclonic circulation formed off the coast of southern Tamil Nadu. It will trigger heavy rains with thunderstorms in Kerala till October 24

“All must be very alert in the coming days. Those who have been shifted to camps must follow Covid-19 guidelines and other hygiene measures too. Health worked will be deployed in camps too,” said CM.

Forty-two people have died due to rains and landslides between October 12 and 20, while six people are missing. As many as 304 relief centres have been opened in the state. Financial assistance to the affected people will be given shortly, he confirmed.

As many as 11 NDRF teams have been deployed in the state for rescue operations and the Chief Minister said that Army personnel were also a part of the rescue operations, along with the helicopters of the Air Force and the Navy.
