Ernakulam: A controversy has surfaced after a box, in which a dead body was kept, was found in the canteen of the government taluk hospital in Paravur. The health department conducted inspection and closed the canteen.

A body, which was embalmed and kept in the taluk hospital mortuary, was brought in the box. This box was kept in the canteen for a week.

North Paravur Municipality opposition leader TV Nidhin had filed a complaint with the municipal health department. But no investigation was conducted. The issue was raised in the hospital management committee and the meeting of the council. After the health officials reached the canteen for inspection, the box was shifted from the place.

When the issue was raised on the day the hospital management committee meeting was held, municipality chairperson VA Prabhavathy visited the place and asked for the box to be removed.

The body was brought in the box from abroad. According to a report, some people associated with the hospital took the box and kept it in the canteen as they were planning to sell it.

The municipal authorities had issued a notice stating that the canteen was functioning in unhealthy conditions. Hospital superintendent has informed that the canteen has been temporarily shut down. Nidhin has filed a complaint with the police seeking investigation into the matter.

Yuva Morcha leaders conducted a march to the hospital demanding investigation into the issue.
