HC verdict on voters list for LSG polls against stubbornness of govt, EC: K. P. A. Majeed

“The allegations of both the Election Commission and the state government are baseless. The now votes list will not put any financial burden on the government,” the Muslim League (IUML) general secretary said.

Kozhikode: The High Court verdict on voters list for the upcoming Local Self Government polls rejected the Kerala government’s claim that preparing a new voters list was a financial burden, said Muslim League (IUML) general secretary K. P. A. Majeed.

“The allegations of both the Election Commission and the state government are baseless. The new voters list will not put any financial burden on the government. Even the government employees will have no problem as they don’t have to conduct a new survey or collect information from door to door to prepare the new voters list," said Majeed.

The HC verdict has put an end to the stubbornness of the government and the EC, he added.

The Kerala High Court had directed not to use the 2015 voters list for the ensuing Local Self Government (LSG) polls. The HC issued the direction after approving the United Democratic Front’s appeal challenging the Election Commission order to use the 2015 votes list for the ensuing LSG polls.

The HC found that using the 2015 voters list for the ensuing LSG polls was wrong. Nullifying the EC order, the HC directed to conduct the LSG polls using the 2019 voters list.
