HC to consider anticipatory bail plea of Swapna Suresh today
Kochi: The Kerala High Court will consider the anticipatory bail plea of Swapna Suresh, the key conspirator in the gold smuggling in diplomatic baggage case. The Customs is still looking for Swapna as she is absconding after the incident came to light. Justice Ashok Menon will hear the case through video conferencing. Swapna approached the court for anticipatory bail via online on Wednesday.
Swapna's bail plea is listed as the 108th case. Considering the gravity of the case, the central government has appointed senior lawyer K Ramkumar. He will appear before the court with Assistant Solicitor General P Vijayakumar.
The Customs is of the stand that granting bail to Swapna will affect the investigation. They will state that Swapna has a key role in the smuggling case and she should be sent in custody. The Customs assume that they can get important evidences if Swapna and Sarith are quizzed together.
Meanwhile, Swapna is trying to turn the case into a diplomatic issue between the countries and avoid being accused in the smuggling case. The Customs has limitations to investigate as the gold was smuggled in diplomatic baggage. There are many hindrances even for questioning the lowest staff in the consulate. Knowing this, Swapna claimed that she only acted according to the instructions of the consul general.
Swapna Suresh has been absconding for a week to escape from the Customs. There were reports that she escaped to Tamil Nadu. Though the Customs intensified search in Thiruvananthapuram and other places, they have not received any clues regarding her hideout.
