HC makes helmets mandatory for pillions on two wheelers
Kochi: The Kerala High Court made helmets mandatory for both riders and pillions on two wheelers. A division bench headed by the chief justice ordered to implement the central government order making helmets mandatory for all two wheeler riders and pillions above the age of four.
Amending the Motor Vehicles Act, the central government had made helmets mandatory for pillion riders on two wheelers. Although the law was enacted, the Kerala government had not implemented it. Observing this, HC said that the rule must be strictly followed.
The HC clarified that the new rule, which makes helmets mandatory for all two wheeler riders and pillions above the age of four, must be strictly implemented.
The HC directed the government to issue a circular in this regard and advertise through media and in movie theatres. Following this, the government withdrew its appeal against making helmets mandatory for pillion riders on two wheelers.
