HC expresses grief over student’s suicide after being unable to access online classes
Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday expressed grief over the suicide of Devika, a Class 10 student of Irumbiliyam GHSS in Malappuram, over the lack of facilities to access online classes.
“Devika’s suicide is saddening. This incident took place in a country where we claim providing free education to all,” the court observed.
A section of students had moved the HC complaining that a CBSE school in Kollam was pressing them to pay tuition and other fees even though classes are online. Considering the petition, HC mentioned Devika’s suicide.
The petition alleged that though bus fees and others are not imposed, new categories of fees are introduced to secure money.
HC observed that the petition serves the public interest and hence referred it to the bench under the chief justice.
The case would be considered again on Thursday.
