Guruvayur: Observing World Environment Day, the municipal authority has decided to strictly implement the ban on plastic carry bags in Guruvayur from Sunday. With this, plastic carry bags will not be allowed in Guruvayur. Though the municipality imposed a ban on plastic earlier, it was not effectively implemented after giving relaxations during the COVID period.

People from other places often carry plastic bags to Guruvayur. As the plastic ban will be back into force, the municipality will display the warning messages in public places including parking centres.

Shops, lodges and hotels here are not to use plastic bags. But street vendors have been widely using it. Plastic bags are also used to distribute food packets to street people. Shopkeepers have been asked to hand over the plastic bags stored for regular use to the municipal authority.

The municipality has warned that strict action will be taken against people who violate the ban.

Guruvayur municipal secretary Beena S Kumar informed that cloth bag manufacturing units will be encouraged for replacing plastic bags with cloth bags.

Used drinking water bottles are also getting largely dumped across the town. In order to address this issue, the municipality is planning to establish water ATM units in major centres of the town and on temple premises. Water ATM units will ensure drinking water supply to the needy and solve the pollution from plastic bottles.

The municipality has already started water ATM units in various places
