Ahmedabad: Former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala is busy heading the screening committee to select Congress candidates for the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections. It is learned that the selection of candidates for various constituencies will continue beyond September 15 deadline set by AICC.

Meanwhile, Ramesh Chennithala told media that the final list will be handed over to AICC on September 23. Chennithala is facing a tough test in Gujarat to revive Congress and find the right candidates for elections. However, several Congress leaders had defected to BJP. Due to these political uncertainties, Gujarat Congress Pradesh Committee has decided to prolong the announcement of the final list of potential candidates for various constituencies.

Meanwhile, GPCC also rolled out criteria for selecting candidates. Youngsters and women are given priority. Further, people who lack public appeal will be avoided from contesting. Congress is also looking to utilise the anti-incumbency factor in the state to topple the BJP government. Meanwhile, BJP is yet to release the list of candidates.
