New Delhi: The Central Government has decided to remove Shashi Tharoor MP as Chairman of the IT standing committee in Parliament in the wake of him contesting the Congress Presidential polls. It is learned that the central government had officially informed Congress about their decision.
Meanwhile, Tharoor was offered the role of Chairman of the Chemicals & Fertilizers committee. However, Congress alleged that the central government is trying to undermine strong measures taken by the IT standing committee against the BJP government and thereby bring control over social media platforms.
Earlier, the committee summoned the representatives of Twitter, Facebook and Google to address the misuse of social media platforms in the country. Last month, Twitter representatives were questioned by the committee based on allegations that the Indian government forced the company to put one of its agents on its payroll to access user data.
BJP members and Shashi Tharoor had differing views on the matter. This led to BJP members demanding the government to remove senior Congress leaders from the committee.
