Govt to open 3500 co-operative Onam markets
Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided to open 3500 co-operative Onam markets in the state with the aim of controlling the prices of commodities during Onam. The decision was informed by Minister Kadakampally Surendran. The markets will be functioning from August 14 to August 24 in the urban, rural areas of the state. 41 items will be available in the market with discounts ranging from Rs 750 to Rs 900. The markets will be official inaugurated on August 14.
The subsidised sale of groceries and items of daily use will be conducted in association with Triveni department stores /supermarkets /megamarts, Neethi stores, Nanma stores and retail outlets run by service co-operative groups, women co-operative groups, SC-ST co-operative groups and employees’ co-operative groups.
Subsidised daily need commodities like rice, sugar, oil and various grams will be available in the market.
Also unsubsidised commodities that are essential during Onam, Bakrid festivals will also be available at lower rates.
The groups entrusted with sales responsibility have been selected in a manner for the markets to be functioning at all panchayats, municipalities and corporations.
