Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is preparing another election in the Secretariat employees cooperative society despite the surge in COVID cases.
The state Election Commission has issued notification to conduct Secretariat Housing Cooperative Society election on March 10. There are 4,900 voters in the Housing Cooperative Society.
Following the Secretariat Canteen Administrative Committee election on January 29, there has been a surge in COVID cases among Secretariat employees. Around 4,200 employees attended the election that was organised at the Darbar Hall. The Finance and Legal Departments in the Secretariat have been closed temporarily after more than 60 employees tested positive.
Meanwhile, the Housing Cooperative Society, where the election is scheduled to take place, has been closed since February 3. Secretariat Staff Cooperative Society was also closed from February 5, after a few employees tested positive.
A good percentage of employees who turned up to vote in the canteen election are officers under deputation in other districts and outside the Secretariat. Their colleagues in other regions are anxious due to COVID outbreak in the Secretariat.
Kerala Secretariat Association President J Bensy and General Secretary T Sreekumar, demanded that the Housing Cooperative Society election should be postponed. They also stated that the government is not giving priority to the lives of its employees. Secretariat Action Council has sent a letter to the Chief Minister and Cooperative Society Registrar in this regard.
