Govt not providing special Onam kit and sugar is gross injustice: Mullappally Ramachandran
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government which celebrates Onam by spending crores of rupees while making the under privileged and flood affected starve is a disgrace to Kerala, said KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran on Tuesday.
The Congress leader alleged that the state government’s decision not to provide Onam kits and sugar was gross injustice to the common people of Kerala. Over five lakh people who come under Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme was affected by the government’s decision, he said.
The state government which is reluctant to provide Onam kits and sugar, is spending crores of rupees for luxury and to celebrate, Mullappally Ramachandran alleged.
During Onam, all the previous governments had given priority to providing necessary items to the people through Nyayavila (fair price) stores. The present government’s decision not to provide Onam kit and sugar citing inability to bear the added expenditure is condemnable, he said.
The government had spent lavishly from the treasury to celebrate 1000 days of its rule at every district. Moreover, the government spent the common man’s tax money to buy expensive vehicles and to rebuild minister’s apartments, alleged Mullappally Ramachandran.
“Had the government avoided such unnecessary expenses, the common man could have celebrated Onam very happily and without burning a hole in his pocket,” he said.
The government also showed lapses in distributing immediate relief to the flood affected. The government had announced that it would distribute immediate relief to flood victims before September 7. However, among the 1.25 lakh people who stayed in relief camps, less than 50,000 received the financial aid.
It is sad that as all the government offices are closed for Onam holidays, these people will receive the benefits only after Onam. Lapses form the government robbed the common man’s Onam of colour and fragrance, he added.
