Govt mulling distribution of free Onam food kits

Nearly Rs 700 crores would be required to provide free food kits to 88 lakh families in Kerala.

Alappuzha: Public Distribution System department in the state has started with efforts to provide free food kits to all families during Onam. Announcement will be made in this regard as soon as the government approves it.

Last year, Onam kits were not distributed to even priority groups citing that it would cause financial liabilities. However, this year Public Distribution department decided to go ahead with the Onam kits due to the pandemic. Nearly Rs 700 crores would be required to provide free food kits to 88 lakh families in Kerala. It is expected that the finance department would approve this.

Blue and white card holders will not be given the Rs 15 per kg rice this month. It will be given to only those who did not avail in May and June. People who did not avail the rice in the last month can get up to 10 kgs of rice and those who did not avail it for the last two months can avail up to 20 kgs of rice.

Finger prints of the card holders are not required in containment zones of the state. Ration shop owners have demanded that finger print identification should be avoided across the state.
